The Enterprise Operations Challenge

As the cost profile for recoverable resources changes, the Oil and Gas industry's leading producers are looking to increase the efficiency of each dollar, hour and revenue cycle. Imperatives are to reduce operational costs while simultaneously meeting increasingly volatile market conditions. Whether companies are focused on production or processing, storage or transportation, natural gas or oil—today's challenges are the same.

A consistent view of real-time information provides the foundation for executives striving to maximize efficiency and increase production. Operational personnel and corporate executives demand the right information, in the right context, tailored for their organizational role, delivered in real-time. Yet fulfillment of this daunting promise is impeded because the information necessary to return the best answers resides in a myriad of information systems - both time series and transactional data alike - traversing competencies such as SCADA, reserve and reservoir management, simulation, land management, and regulatory reporting.

Our industry faces the common challenge of how to collect, manage and distribute these enormous silos of rich, yet isolated information.

Two Philosophies, Two Alternative Approaches

Traditionally, procurement of new SCADA systems favored custom engineered solutions. These offerings rely on armies of engineers and consultants to build, integrate and maintain. While they provide functional depth for operational personnel, these centralized solutions separate critical data from front office management and favor proprietary client applications as part of a "complete" yet closed suite. Why? Because the massive amounts of time series data generated by average field operations would overwhelm most corporate IT networks, therefore solutions for the front office and the field were kept separate. System replacement horizons with such systems extend a maximum of seven to ten years.

SCADA applications—which are entering their third generation of requirements—are employing standards-based, network-centric technology as their foundation. This has allowed software products such as the CygNet™ Enterprise Operations Platform to be much more open, flexible and evergreen. Adaptability helps our customers easily change their operations to fit constantly shifting organizational and market requirements. By providing a more attractive total cost of ownership, CygNet extends the horizon of today’s SCADA systems from years to decades.
